What's Happening In PE: December

Basketball is one of the most popular activities not only at PE but also at recess time. Students love playing basketball games as well as shooting games such as knockout. Basketball is a great team sport that teaches students the importance of teamwork as well as cooperation. Kindergarten students will start to learn the basics such as dribbling a ball with two hands and then one hand, passing, as well as shooting form. Grades 2-3 will also focus on developmental skills such as dribbling games, passing games, defense and offensive strategies, the game knockout, as well as playing 3 on 3 half court games. For the upper grades, skill development such as dribbling and passing will still be worked on however, they will incorporate these skills into more team games. Skills that will be learned are below:
  1. Dribbling (Left and Right hand)
  2. Passing (Bounce pass, Chest pass, Give and Go)
  3. Shooting (Layups, Free-throws, Shooting with a defender)
  4. Defensive and Offensive strategies
  5. Teamwork

Frisbee is also one of the more popular units here at PCY. Kindergarten students will start to learn the correct way to hold a foam frisbee, proper stance, proper execution of a frisbee throw, as well as how to catch a frisbee. Students in grades 1-3 will also work on these skills but with regular frisbee's and not foam ones. Students in these grades will also learn how to play frisbee golf and ultimate frisbee. Students in grades 4-6 will learn how to play a game of frisbee golf as well as ultimate frisbee. Students will learn how to move into open spaces to create spacing in order to catch the frisbee in ultimate frisbee. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the correct throwing form
  2. Demonstrate the correct catching form
  3. How to throw a frisbee for accuracy
  4. How to catch a frisbee while running
  5. Understand the rules and procedures of the game.
Students will be given various opportunities to present these skills throughout the unit by different activities and the games

Another lesson students will be learning is putting. Putting is a great unit for students who don't like to participate in the normal team setting. Also, this unit teaches students to strike an object with a long handled implement which is one of the PE standards. Another reason I love this unit is because anyone can play it. Doesn't matter how talented or athletic you are, anyone can succeed with practice. Golf will also teach kids integrity, respect, persistence and respect. These skills will then hopefully be transferred over into everyday life.

This unit is specifically designed to help all students:
  • Develop & refine motor skills & movement patterns as they related to putting
  •  Understand & apply concepts and strategies that will enhance student success
  •  Learn the proper grip, stance and stroke of a putt
  •  Exhibit responsible personal & social behavior; Recognize the value of treating equipment safely and respectfully
